No other collection by John Berger, the British art critic, writer, and Booker Prize laureate, discusses art and politics with such an earnest desire for change.

Berger himself called The Shape of a Pocket (2001) very personal and written with a sense of urgent necessity. With his characteristic attentiveness and critical eye, Berger writes about the works of Bosch, Rembrandt, Degas, Kahlo, Fayum portraits, and cave drawings, through which he finds ways to reflect on the suffocation of the present day, economic inequality, and the claustrophobia of the globalized world.

The essays from 1991–2000, collected under one cover, strive to resist the failings of the contemporary world and search for possibilities of other spaces and other worlds, one of which is the pocket of space between the reader and the author.
