Chronicle of Ukrainian Design (Fourth issue)
Chronicle of Ukrainian Design is a magazine about the history and development of Ukrainian design, initiated by Spiilka design bureau. The magazine is an attempt to observe and present how Ukrainian design identity was born and evolved.
The fourth issue explores the unobvious connections between Opishnya ceramics and the Ukrainian avant-garde, between theatrical scenography and contemporary typefaces, between The Aeneid and "colorfulness," between weightlifters and documentary filmmakers, and many more cross-cultural phenomena in Ukrainian design.
Focus areas: Anatol Petrytskyi, whose scenography inspired Picasso; the visual identity of Franko Theater that set the tone for the modern theatrical renaissance; the visual language of Ukrainian Theater magazine, created together with type designer Dmytro Rastvortsev; the NAMU identity project by Banda Agency; the typographic legacy of Vasyl Khomenko, thanks to whom the printed Aeneid with Bazylevych's illustrations appeared in 1969 — there is a whole design story about it as well. A separate section is dedicated to contemporary examples of design: MEGOGO, the nomadic art space MOT (Module of Temporality), the Brave and Docudays UA festivals, and the visual identity of Eurovision 2017.
The project was implemented with the support of the exclusive partner Sense Bank, which systematically invests in culture. All profits from the sale will be used to fund further issues.
